In USDA Zones 9a and colder, it is used as a container plant and provides extensive color for a long period of time, as do the cut flowers. Inflorescence erect, 68 cm long, with somewhat flexious axis bracts 45, narrowly lanceolate, not deeply boat-shaped, ca 8 cm long, red or yellow. Established plants will tolerate short periods of drought, but this cold-sensitive species will quickly die if subjected to frost. Leaves with long petiole blade linear lanceolate, with rounded base, up to 3045 by 35 cm. For best performance, they should be fertilized regularly.
The plants reach a height of 2 to 5 feet with a spread of 3 to 5 feet and grow best in full sun to partial shade in organic-rich, evenly moist soil with good drainage.
